Estela es una mujer de 40 años, vive con su hijo Ismael de 8 años. Madre e hijo tienen una relación muy cercana.
Su cotidianeidad es dura, se siente fatigada y abrumada por su situación económica. Busca trabajo y no encuentra, no está muy preparada, cuidaba a una señora mayor pero esta murió.
Estela es creyente y va a la iglesia. Tiene un amigo, Jorge, que es un hombre abusivo.
A Ismael le gusta jugar con un caleidoscopio, el caleidoscopio como la realidad distorsionada de la cual a veces queremos huir.
Estela toma una decisión drástica en medio de una situación desesperada. Una decisión con consecuencias desproporcionadas tomada por miles de mujeres diariamente en Latinoamérica.

Estela is a religious woman and goes to church. She has a boyfriend, Jorge, who is an abusive man.
Ismael likes to play with a kaleidoscope, the kaleidoscope as the distorted reality from which we sometimes want to flee.
Estela makes a drastic decision in the middle of a desperate situation. A decision with disproportionate consequences made by thousands of women in Latin America everyday.

De acuerdo con el estudio, titulado “Mujeres, políticas de drogas y encarcelamiento” realizado por la Organización de Estados Americanos (OEA)1, la mayoría de las mujeres que están en las prisiones de Latinoamérica han sido acusadas por distribución o transporte de drogas a pequeña escala. El encarcelamiento de mujeres en la región se ha incrementado “a un ritmo alarmante por la expedición de leyes de drogas extremadamente punitivas” y la “imposición de penas desproporcionadas”, asegura el informe, y agrega que junto con Asia, América Latina es la región con más mujeres presas del mundo.
Esta realidad acontece en toda América Latina. Es una problemática que está asociada a las dificultades económicas, a la violencia de género, a la falta de oportunidades. La gran mayoría de las veces las mujeres son involucradas a través de sus parejas obligándolas a formar parte de la red, generalmente en la tarea del transporte de la droga.

According to the study, entitled "Women, drug policies and imprisonment" carried out by the Organization of American States (OAS) 1, most of the women who are in Latin American prisons have been accused of distributing or transporting drugs on a small scale. The incarceration of women in the region has increased "at an alarming rate due to the issuance of extremely punitive drug laws" and the "imposition of disproportionate penalties," the report says, adding that along with Asia, Latin America is the region with more female prisoners in the world.
This reality occurs throughout all Latin America. It is a problem that is associated with economic difficulties, gender violence and the lack of opportunities. Usually they are involved through their partners who force them to be part of the network, generally in the task of transporting drugs.

Este el tercer cortometraje de una trilogía donde se retratan mujeres solitarias y marginadas por la sociedad: La brújula vimeo.com/872656397?share=copy es sobre una adulta mayor que es desalojada de su casa y La ocarina sobre una niña que vive en un entorno de violencia doméstica y conoce a una mujer indígena. Han participado en diversos festivales nacionales e internacionales y La Ocarina obtuvo tres reconocimientos: en el Costa Rica Festival Internacional de Cine, el premio CAI/La Reforma otorgado por los privados de libertad, en el Festival de Cine Pobre Panalandia en ciudad de Panamá, el premio a la mejor película centroamericana y una mención especial en el Festival de Cine Independiente Zeichen der Nachte en Berlín. También como selección del Festival de Cine de Suchitoto ha participado en el Festival de Cortometrajes de la cadena de cines Cinemark en todo Centroamérica.. This is the third short film in a trilogy where lonely and marginalized characters are portrayed: 2The compass” is about an old woman who is evicted from her home and “La ocarina” about a girl who lives in an environment of domestic violence and meets an indigenous woman . They have participated in various national and international festivals and La Ocarina won three awards: at the Costa Rica International Film Festival, the CAI / La Reforma award awarded by those deprived of liberty, at the Panalandia Poor Film Festival in Panama City, the award for the best Central American film and recognition at the Zeichen der Nachte Independent Film Festival in Berlin. Also as a selection for the Suchitoto Film Festival, he has participated in the Short Film Festival of the Cinemark chain of cinemas throughout Central America. See other festivals here

Wendy Chinchilla
Wendy Chinchilla es bailarina de la Compañía Nacional de Danza desde el 2005, donde también ha ejercido como coreógrafa. Paralelo a esto se ha desarrollado en diferentes proyectos independientes. En el 2005 recibe el Premio Nacional de Danza Mireya Barboza como mejor intérprete. En el 2013 recibe el premio a la mejor bailarina del XXX Festival Nacional de Coreógrafos Graciela Moreno (Teatro Nacional) y el reconocimiento a la mejor bailarina del Festival Nacional de la Danza (Teatro Melico Salazar) de ese mismo año. En el 2018 y 2019 recibe nuevamente estos galardones. Ha bailado en festivales en diferentes partes del mundo. Es la protagonista de la multipremiada pelicula Clara Sola, estrenada recientemente en el festival de Cannes y que representara a Costa Rica en los premios Oscar.
Wendy Chinchilla has been a dancer with the National Dance Company since 2005, where she has also worked as a choreographer. Parallel to this, she has participated in different independent projects. In 2005 she received the Mireya Barboza National Dance Award as best performer. In 2013 she received the award for the best dancer at the XXX Graciela Moreno National Choreographers Festival (National Theater) and the recognition for the best dancer at the National Dance Festival (Melico Salazar Theater) that same year. In 2018 and 2019 she receives these awards again. She has danced at festivals in different parts of the world. She is the main actress of the award-winning film Clara Sola that recently participated in Cannes Film Festival and was selected to represent Costa Rica at the Oscars Awards.

Luis Arenas (Lucho Calavera)
Luis Arenas fue vocalista principal del mítico grupo El Parque, una de las agrupaciones de rock con mayor trayectoria a nivel nacional, colabora en la composición, convirtiéndose en éxitos número uno en emisoras nacionales e internacionales. Graban con el sello SONY MUSIC y se convierten en el primer grupo costarricense con un video musical en la programación de MTV Latino. Ha compartido escenario con artistas como Soda Stéreo, Café Tacuba, Fabulosos Cadillacs, Alek Syntek y Héroes del Silencio.
Luis Arenas was the main vocalist of the mythical group El Parque, one of the rock groups with the longest history at the national level, collaborates in the composition, becoming number one hits on national and international stations. Vive en Costa Rica, de nacionalidad uruguayo/costarricense.. Estudió producción audiovisual en el ICAT (Universidad Nacional) y en el INA. Es profesora de español. Trabajó en el Programa de Arte Español para el Exterior en el Ministerio de Asuntos Exteriores de España y en proyectos artísticos en el Kunstverein in Hamburg. Ha experimentado con la pintura. Ha colaborado en diversas películas entre ellas El Camino y Dos Fridas de Ishtar Yasin. Ha escrito y dirigido los cortometrajes La Brújula y La Ocarina y colaborado en diversas producciones audiovisuales.

Su primer largometraje, RIVES, se estrenó en 2011 en el Festival de Cannes. Dirige despues UNE HISTOIRE AMÉRICAINE (Viennale 2015). Su primer documental, LA PYRAMIDE INVISIBLE, se estrenó en 2019 en el festival Cinéma du Réel. Su última película LE VRAI DU FAUX salió en 2023, está participando en festivales entre ellos CPH:Dox, Shangaï IFF o Tallin Black Nights.
Armel Hostiou was born in 1976 in Rennes, France. After studying filmmaking at La Fémis in Paris, he directed several short films, music videos, and video installations. His first feature film, RIVES, premiered in 2011 in the Cannes Film Festival. In 2015, UNE HISTOIRE AMÉRICAINE with Vincent Macaigne and Kate Moran is distributed in France and the United States. His first documentary, LA PYRAMIDE INVISIBLE, premiered in 2019 at the Cinéma du Réel festival.
